Back pains usually begin from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. It is also known as Dorsalgia. Occasionally the pain is divided into the upper back, middle back or lowers back. Because of back ache, often pain is also felt or radiate in the leg.
Spine is the interconnecting net of all nerves, joints, muscles. Spine is the most fragile and complex part of our body, which controls all the functions of our limbs.
Duration of back pain is less than four weeks or more than 12 weeks. Back pain is classified into different categories like non specific back pain and secondary back pain. Many of the patients have non-specific back pain, only few have secondary back pain and in these cases some have metastatic cancer or most of them have herniated disc. Hemiations occur mostly at the lowest two lumbar inter-vertebral levels.
In the beginning, weakness of legs or trembling starts. Pain gets worse when fever starts and when it becomes difficult to sleep due to pain. Skeletal muscle of the back is the one source of back pain. Another source of back pain is facet joints, also called the primary source of the pain. Other sources and causes of back pain include spinal disc herniation and degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, cancer and infection.
Back pain is diagnosed with the help of X-Ray, MRI or CT scans. Back pain does not usually require immediate medical intervention. Goal of the doctors or physicians while treating the patient having back pain is to minimize the pain without any surgical therapies. Not all treatments work for all people with the same conditions.
To reduce the back pain sometimes heat therapy, electrotherapy, cold compression therapy, inversion therapy, and massage therapy are used, but medication is still controversial (but sometimes muscle relaxants are used to reduce the pain). Yoga is also used to reduce the pain. Exercises are the effective way to get relief from pain. Surgery is always a last option. Surgery may sometimes be appropriate for patients having some disc problem, fracture or nerve damage.
